7:08 am
after all, friday in cincinnati when they were heading from the hoet to hotel to the airport, they thought they were getting on a plane to washington, d.c. because the nationals were leading the st. louis cardinals late in the division series elimination game. by the time the giants got on the flight, they realized st. louis was en route to beating the nationals 9-7 altering the giants travel plans due west. >> it was a pretty unbelievable game. you know, i thought for sure we were going to be going to d.c. jumping out to the 6-0 lead. they were able to fight their way back. there was a positive to both for us. it's nice to come home and have the home field advantage too. it's nice. >> if you look at the game we had and the game they had, they were similar. we were up 6-0 barely hung on and they found a way to get it done. both clubs at some point had the backs to the wall.
7:09 am
we did going into cincinnati. had to win three straight. they're down a couple runs in the ninth. found a way to get it done. i think it says a lot about the two clubs, the character of the clubs and how hard they fight and it should be a really hard fought series here. >> reporter: in fact, this will be the first meeting in a league championship series between the previous two world series champions. first pitch from giants scheduled here at 5:15 this afternoon. coming up later, we'll hear from former giant and current cardinal carlos beltran about how he feels to come back and face his old team for a trip to the world series. now to decision 2012. president barack obama and his challenger mitt romney are trading campaign trail for a classroom of sorts gearing up for tuesday's debate.

7:23 am
we're using this coat to just kind of pull out the red that's in the dress. the other part of what she's wearing is the nude shoes and they're fantastic. they're a new black pump and we're mixing that in with a lot of stuff that we've taken from summer and moving into our fall wardrobes. what i also love about this is that her makeup has totally changed for fall. she's wearing a dark lip. we haven't seen this in some time with a lighter eye and she's also using the bun trend which is huge for hair right now. again, a really fun part of this is that they are all mix and match pieces. you can take this jacket and wear it with your jeans, wear it with skinny jeans, wear it with leggings and take the dress and throw on a nice jacket and flats and run errands looking completely fabulous. so it's a really, really fun look that we have going for fall here incorporating some of my favorite fall trends. >> and obviously you're saying versatility with the jacket if you want to get into this and

7:25 am
we have the military trend with her pants. cargo pants. the zippers. the pockets. and we're seeing colored denim again except that this time we see it in fall colors. we're seeing hunter greens, maroons, burgundies, lots of dark color and wax jeans which is giving it a shine. >> i'm going to ask the director, can we go further down to see the shoes as well? >> the shoes. these are my favorite. >> step back so we can see the shoes. we don't want to miss this. >> she's wearing the gold shoes. she's are fabulous. this is date night right here. a great bag with it. they are hot. they are hot. what can i say? she can wear them and this whole outfit with boots later if she's running errands and wants to be more comfortable. the shoes are a great price point and you can wear them all year. >> with dark tones and black, they really pop when worn with that outfit. >> picks up metallic pieces in
7:26 am
her bag and we have the fishtail braid on her hair. she's got a lighter lip and darker eye. we switched up the makeup here. eyes are much darker and lips are with a nude color and then amanda incorporated the braid trend and brought it into a loose fishtail that looks fantastic and clean and polished but it took five minutes to do. >> fantastic. we have about a minute left. let's talk about the jewelry and some of the footwear you brought. >> statement pieces are big. statement piece jewelry. this is samantha. >> what is a statement piece? >> it makes a statement. you walk in and everyone goes my gosh, necklace, reaction you're looking for. phenomenal. she's out of australia. "the new york times" called her a breakthrough jewelry designer. these are available in los gatos. put it on with jeans and a t-shirt and you look fabulous.
7:27 am
one of my favorite shoe designers. booties under the knee, over the knee, you can wear this with your little dresses. you can wear this with skinny jeans and military trend. this one is studded. a little rock and roll to your look. and over the knee comfortable boots that anybody can wear. >> i'll give it a try. thank you for taking the time this morning. real pleasure. >> thank you. >> much more ahead on "today in the bay," have you caught it? giants fever sweeping through the bay. we'll have a live report from at&t park on the wild ride in store for fans at today's big game.

seven-day forecast is going to bring shorts and t-shirts back to most of our valleys. you'll see a big jump in temperatures coming up in the seven-day forecast and a closer look at our game-day forecast for 49ers and giants coming uei just a few minutes. >> less than ten hours away from first pitch at at&t park for this afternoon's championship series game between the giants and st. louis cardinals. let's go live now down to the field with john henry smith. john, i have giants in five. what do you have? >> reporter: i know everybody is making predictions for the nlcs. here's my prediction. for game one, 42,000 plus fans are going to fill these seats out here at at&t park as they exhort their 2010 world champion giants to eliminate the 2011 world series champion cardinals. what's tougher to predict is the reception these fans are going to give to former giant and now cardinals slugger carlos beltran. you may remember the giants
7:32 am
acquired beltran last season in an effort to get back to the postseason. when that didn't happen, the former giants signed with the cardinals as a free agent. beltran says he only has fond memories of his time here with the giants. >> it was great honestly. being able to play was a good thing for me. i was looking forward to trying to be in this position. unfortunately it didn't happen. at the same time, you know, just being able to play for these fans, they're loud. they're good fans. and they are supportive here and on the road. i got the opportunity to meet a lot of new faces, new teammates and it was a good time. >> reporter: beltran leads a potent cardinal lineup which featured five players hitting over 20 home runs this season. the giants have only one such player, buster posey.
7:33 am
of course in 2010, the giants prove you can win it all with superior pitching and they'll try to get that done again as madison bumgarner goes to the hill at 5:15 this afternoon to throw out the first pitch for game one of the national league championship series between the giants and the st. louis cardinals. from at&t park, i'm john henry smith, nbc bay area news. >> thank you, john henry. the big question this morning is it too late to get giants tickets? monte francis has your answer. >> reporter: fans who came to the giants box office to buy tickets were disappointed to see the windows were closed. >> i think the cheapest seats are a buck 30 each. >> reporter: online stub hub is selling standing room only tickets at $120 each. for actual seats, you'll have to pay anywhere from $140 to $1,000. >> it's a big day for us. we got tickets for the 49ers game in the morning and we
7:34 am
didn't get tickets yet for the baseball game but we're pretty sure we're getting them. >> deep left field. that is way back and a grand slam! >> reporter: for those hoping to see the giants play in person, a stub hub spokeswoman says there are still 4,000 tickets available on the site and 7,000 for monday's game. the giants division series victory is no doubt going to translate into big business for bars and restaurants near the ballpark. the manager of pete's tavern says for his business, it means tens of thousands of dollars in additional revenue. >> on regular game day, we'll start getting packed two hours before the game. start getting crowded around 10:30 in the morning and last throughout the evening. really looking forward to it. >> reporter: the manager says as soon as he knew giants were playing a home game, he ordered eight times the amount of beer as he would for a usual sunday. >> as soon as cardinals pulled that out and knew we would be back home, we were on the phones
7:35 am
immediately. >> reporter: all of the excitement about the players also means big business for stores selling giants gear. a manager at the giants dugout store at the ballpark told me they just received a shipment in today and merchandise is already flying off the shelves. monte francis, "today in the bay." >> stub hub says you can buy tickets for contingent games, even tickets to the world series if the giants make it that far. police are investigating a string of home burglaries in the north bay. around 15 burglaries were reported in the past several weeks in san rafael. officers say they follow a similar pattern. they enter through unlocked windows and doors and search for jewelry and cash without rans k ransacking the house or making a mess. they often place stolen items in a pillowcase. the thieves are so tidy that sometimes the victims don't notice for several days they've been robbed. people living in east palo alto are taking a stand against violence. communities are taking part in a

7:42 am
7:43 am
7:44 am
welcome back to the program. it's 7:43. i don't want to make you feel bad about the choice to stay in and watch the news. these people are running 26.2 miles. the nike women's marathon running through downtown san francisco this morning. started at union square. they'll weave through down the embarcadero and over the golden gate bridge. my wife ran this once. end this up at golden gate park. good luck to all of them and maybe the rest of us will get out for a run later. tens of millions of people wait for tuesday's second debate between president barack obama and challenger mitt romney. local issues have compelling stories of their own. nbc bay area political analyst larry gerston is here to introduce us to some of them. obviously you get to the ballot and we talk about president and all that and then they get to the ballot, why are there so many pages? >> there are lots. just to set the picture.
7:45 am
there are nearly 100 local ballot measures. 100 on the nine bay area counties. that's a lot. a third of these things will deal with issues of governance, policies, programs. what should we do about this or that. another third will focus on parcel taxes either for local governments or for schools and about 20% ask voters to approve school construction bonds which together amount to $2.5 billion. that's a lot of money over the next few years. and there are a few others. you put it together, there's a lot of things for people to think about besides the presidency. >> a lot of that is if you voted before are very familiar topics. parcel tax for the school or something like that. you know what the drill is there. are there things that came up this year that made you as an experienced election watcher say i never saw that before? >> every year there's something unique. you think you've seen it all. >> that's why you're so enthusia enthusiastic. it always changes.
7:46 am
>> measure n. that's one you'll hear about if you hadn't already. it's in richmond. a fee of one cent for each ounce of carbonated nonalcoholic beverages. the idea is simple. fight obesity. childhood obesity particularly. the goal is to raise $22 million. opponents have raised $2.2 million or only 100 times as much. it's estimated that this will spend about $150 per vote. that's a lot of soda. that's three times what meg whitman spent per vote in 2010. it's amazing. we talk about 15,000 voters really making the rush. here's another one i like. measure f in san francisco. if it passes, it would be the first of a two-step effort to
7:47 am
devise a plan to demolish the damn. it's the centerpiece of a system that delivers water to 2.6 million people in san francisco and much of the bay area. this raises all kinds of issues including sentiments of people living outside of san francisco who might want the water as well and reaction of the federal government who just happens to weigh in because it owns yosemite national park. a few details there to be worked out. and there's measure e, a san jose proposal that would increase the number of card tables at san jose's two card rooms from 98 to 158. that's about a 60% increase. now the argument here is the increased number of tables would generate $20 million annually in badly needed taxes. opponents worried the card rooms cost the city dearly in crime related problems and more card tables means more troubles for law enforcement. here's the whole deal of the potential question of new
7:48 am
revenues on one hand versus the moral issues related to gambling and law enforcement costs. bay 101 pushed most of the money for this initiative and so you get an idea about why they're interested. they spend a million dollars promoting it. >> who is against the card room then? >> two groups. people who believe gambling is a bad idea and not a way for the city to raise money and secondly the idea that it will cost more to enforce it because of crime some people think it is around these card rooms and it would cost more money than you get. >> the debate is fascinating because it really will pit obviously people with very strong environmental feelings who feel strongly about restoring it to its pristine state but politics involved and money involved and logistics of where will you get that water then. >> yeah. it's just not going to fall from the sky. we know that much already.
